Namaste

Clarifying the main metaphor of the Bhagavad Gita about the internal battle, Master YOGANANDA writes:

“From the moment of conception to the last breath, man has to fight innumerable battles in each incarnation: biological, hereditary, bacteriological, physiological, climatic, social, ethical, political, sociological, psychological, metaphysical: so many varieties of internal and external conflicts. In each clash, the forces of good and evil compete for victory. The ultimate goal is Self-realization, the realization of the true Self of man, the soul, created in the image of God, one in the eternal, ever-present, ever-conscious and ever-new bliss of Spirit, or “Sat-Chitta-Ananda”

The practice of yoga leads to meditation which consequently leads us to the realization of the Self in every field of life, from the gross to the subtle. This is the science of the soul and is immensely complete working on body – mind – energy and leading to spiritual awakening. This requires practice, consistency, discipline, courage to transform oneself together with patience, faith, devotion and conscious relaxation or surrender to the Universal Self.

The Master of Kriya Yoga Sri Yukteswar says:

“Everything will be better in the future if you are making a spiritual effort now.”

In essence we are all Divine spiritual beings, perfect, immortal and, at the same time, we are human beings, with our ups and downs, our positive and negative karmas and our dualities…

The work of yoga is an internal practice of self-knowledge; starting initially from the physical body, working in integration with the mental, emotional and energetic body until reaching increasingly subtle and profound layers of our Divine existence.

Through yoga we discover that we are part of the entire Universe and that It lives within us.

The process of evolution and awakening in the memory of the Divine Self, beyond limits and conditioning, is a sometimes long journey… One could say that it is continuous and even infinite…

We don’t transform our habits, tendencies and identifications that limit us to be a certain way, from one day to the next…

Normally this change takes time through yoga practice and especially meditation, metaphysical study and inner contemplation…

An important golden key during the process of transformation and awakening is “not expect anything” or “not create any expectations”… I would say that this is an essential element, which in yoga philosophy is called “isvara pranidhana” or surrender to the Lord of the Universe.

Accepting ourselves, others, things and situations as they are (called “Santosha” in yoga philosophy) also helps in our own transformation. Santosha or contentment is not about passive acceptance; but about feeling grateful for what we are: knowing that of course; we can always improve, however, at the same time, we can also be happy for what we have and above all for what we are now and for what is in this moment. This attitude of being happy with the here and now can be nourished and, nourishing it, makes us freer and lighter.

The essential teaching in the yoga process is, therefore, precisely, to let go and let the transmutation happen as we enter more and more inside ourselves. In the yogic spiritual path we begin to know ourselves and to recognize what we want to transform in our life. We thus realize that what we can change first are our own attitudes; starting from ourselves: from every thought, from every word, from every action and intention.

Through yoga: starting by practicing asanas or psychophysical postures, together with pranayama (conscious breathing that controls and expands prana or life force), reciting and singing mantras that “eliminate evils”, repeating positive and healing affirmations that re-program the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind; meditating together with the cultivation of faith and willpower; it is possible to transform ourselves into the best version of our existence and reveal who we really are in the Divine, Authentic and True Self. …

In this way, little by little, all envy and jealousy are transformed into inspiration, admiration and reverence; all fears are transformed into courage and tranquility, every anger or misunderstanding is transformed into Peace and Joy in the Self: every limit is transformed into expansion. We begin to see ourselves in the other and every relationship (starting from our interior, expanding towards others and life) is expressed through True and unconditional Love – Prema.

Little by little, walking in the grace of yoga, we realize Who We Are and live more and more from this Self full of Light and infinite Love; in Sat- Chitt – Ananda (always present, always conscious and in ever new Joy), as Master Yogananda explains.

“Intuition is the guide of the soul, and it manifests itself naturally in man when the mind is calm. The science of yoga is designed to calm the mind, so that it may clearly hear the unerring counsel of the inner voice.” Yogananda
